The Human Side of Enterprise - Douglas McGregor - McGraw Hill Publishers (ISBN 0070450986) The landmark book that encapsulated the X & Y theory concepts of management. He asks all those interested in empowering and motivating the workforce to examine their theoretical assumptions about the most effective way to manage people. The book opens with a quote from Bill O'Brien, CEO of Hanover Insurance. " The Ferment in management will continue until we find models that are more congruent with human nature." The book examines just that challenge, evolving from the work of McGregor(see above) and through the application of Y theory thinking within W L Gore. The context of the book is continuous improvement in the service sector. Not only the need to collect data but also to develop the skills to interpret and get meaning from the data. Mastering Statistical Process Control - By Tim Stapenhurst - Elsevier. (ISBN 0 7506 6529 7) A very readable book for those interested in securing knowledge from data. Rather than takes us through the ins and outs of SPC, Tim provides a large range of case studies to highlight what can be gleaned from data - and conversely the many misapprehensions that arise when we do not appreciate the science of Statistics. This book is essential reading for professional managers.

The Knowledge Creating Company - Ikujiro Nonaka and Hirotaka Takeuchi -Oxford University Press (ISBN 0195092694) The authors describe the process by which companies learn and create competitively valuable knowledge. What is refreshing about this book is that they go beyond the slogans that have characterised much of the previous work on this subject and delve into the specific structures and processes involved in organisational creativity and learning. A company where true democracy is approached. Deming's Profound Changes - Kenneth Delavigne and Daniel Robertson - PTR Prentice Hall (ISBN 0132926903) This book helps us appreciate the origins of our management thinking which is still very much based on the teachings of Fredrick Taylor (1900s) - or worse still the corruption of Taylor's concepts. It expands on the transformation of our thinking that we should address if we are to compete in the modern world. The Tao of Physics -Fritjof Capra - Flamingo (ISBN 0006544894) Capra, a theoretical physicist, takes us from particle physics into the world of eastern mysticism and into life itself. From the smallest plant, though us as individuals, through our organisations and society, in fact the whole world, we live and secure being in complex interdependent systems. Our world is alive, a developing entity. Life and the interaction of parts are too complex for interpretation through mechanistic models. There is much greater hope in seeing the world as living creative entity. Furthermore that we as humans are creative, adaptive and self organising. We therefore need far less supervision and direction than is commonly assumed. It is a book full of hope. He calls for a person centered learning environment. Dee the Business A hilarious guide to working in Doric - Peter Fraser - Black & White Publishing. (ISBN 1 84502 053 7 ) Peter takes a serious but funny look at what it takes to succeed in the tough business environment of the North East of Scotland and gives us a new tongue in check Doric guide to business and the world of work. It includes a Doric translation of Deming 14 points and his System of Profound Knowledge - it cannot help but bring a smile to your face. Good to Great - Jim Collins - Random House (ISBN 0712676090) This is a pre-sequel of Collins and Porras's book "Built to Last." After a five-year research project, Collins concludes that good to great can and does happen. In this book, he uncovers the underlying variables that enable any type of organisation to make the leap from good to great while other organisations remain only good. Rigorously supported by evidence, his findings are surprising - at times even shocking - to the modern mind.
